FAQ

Frequently asked questions

When must I deregister from my municipality?

When you will live abroad for more than 8 months within a year. You can report your departure up to 5 days before you leave.

Does my residence permit end when I leave?

Not automatically – but if you move your main residence abroad, the IND can withdraw it. For most permits that happens after more than 6 months abroad in a row.

Can I lose my Dutch nationality by living abroad?

Yes, if you also have another nationality and live outside the Netherlands and the EU for 13 years without renewing your Dutch passport or ID card.

Do I need to file a tax return in the year I leave?

Yes. For the year of emigration you file the M form, which covers the part of the year you lived in the Netherlands.

Can I come back later?

Dutch citizens can always return. If you lost your residence permit, you usually need to apply again – sometimes with an MVV.
